Registered Democrats in Melrose recently held a caucus to elect delegates to the 2010 Massachusetts Democratic Convention.
The Convention will be held on Friday, June 4th and Saturday, June 5th at the DCU Center in Worcester, Democrats from across the state will gather to vote on candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Attorney General, Treasurer and Auditor. To appear on the September ballot, candidates must receive at least 15% of the delegates’ vote. In each race the candidate receiving a majority vote will be the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party.
“The caucus was very well attended,” commented Don Lehman, Chair of the Melrose Democratic City Committee. “Folks were lined up, waiting to get in, when we opened the doors. It is great to see so many people involved.” he added.
Visiting the caucus were several candidates in the upcoming fall elections: Grace Ross, candidate for Governor; State Senator Thomas McGee, representing parts of Melrose and candidate for re-election; State Representative Katherine Clark, candidate for State Senate; Mike Day, Candidate for State Senate; and Melrose Alderman Paul Brodeur, candidate for State Representative. Representatives for other candidates were also in attendance.
All of the candidates addressed the assembled caucus goers. “We, as Democrats, are the ones that are talking about the real issues that face people’s lives” commented Senator McGee, summing up a sentiment shared by many Democrats.
Elected as delegates were Maureen Buzby, David Hoff, Daniel Keegan, Mary Beth Mcateer-Margolis, Steve Williams, Eileen Hamblin, Paul Brodeur, Gail Blanchard, Joseph Clark, James Eisenberg, Sandra Festa, Danielle Festa, Lisa Mortimer, Mario Portillo, Joseph Sullivan and Diane MacDonald.
